blog:Oracle profit dips on Peoplesoft

Posted by admin on Sep 21, 2009 in news

Oracle, the world’s second-biggest software company, has seen quarterly profits slide 15% as a result of costs relating to its purchase of Peoplesoft.
Net income was $540m (£286m) in the three months ending 28 February, from $635m a year earlier.
Sales climbed 18% to $2.95bn, missing analyst forecasts.
Buying smaller rival Peoplesoft, coupled with this week’s takeover of Retek, is aimed at cutting Oracle’s reliance on database software.

blog: SAP shares slump on sales setback

Posted by admin on Sep 21, 2009 in news

Shares in SAP closed down 7.7%, after the German software giant said it had missed a key sales forecast.
At one point, shares were 9.5% lower, wiping 5.1bn euros ($6.6bn; £3.4bn) off the value of the firm, before a slight rally later on Friday.
It followed SAP reporting licence sales of 1.26bn euros for the fourth-quarter – well below market forecasts.
Licence sales are a key financial barometer for SAP, as they indicate future service and maintenance revenue.
Analysts had been expecting the firm to report a figure closer to 1.34bn euros.

blog: SAP admits Oracle data downloads

Posted by admin on Sep 21, 2009 in news

SAP has admitted its TomorrowNow unit carried out “inappropriate downloads” of documents from its rival Oracle, but said SAP had not accessed the material.
Oracle is suing SAP, accusing it of hacking into its computer network and stealing vital product information.
In a written legal response to Oracle’s claims of intellectual property theft, SAP said the downloaded material had stayed in TomorrowNow’s systems.
SAP said changes had now been made to TomorrowNow’s management.
“Even a single inappropriate download is unacceptable from my perspective. We regret very much that this occurred,” SAP’s chief executive Henning Kagerman said in a statement.

blog:Media reinvention

Posted by admin on Sep 21, 2009 in news

Google and Yahoo made up a relatively small part of the 1.6 million square feet of exhibition space in Las Vegas.
Inside one of the halls, Google had a colourful stand, while outside Yahoo held court in a tent in the car park.
They proved one of the most popular destinations for many of the 130,000 people who came to CES to get a glimpse of the future.
The dominant theme at the show was how to make it easier for people to have access to the kind of content they want, when they want it and where they want it.
This is exactly where net services such as Google and Yahoo have succeeded.
Google announces its online video store, which it hopes will become a full-fledged digital warehouse of media.
As part of the store, it reached agreement with US network CBS to offer hit shows like CSI and Survivor for $1.99.
“We’re really the enabler,” said Google boss Eric Schmidt in a briefing with journalists at CES.
“The important thing is to get the content out. Digital information should be available on every device all of the time.”

blog:Music marches to a digital beat

Posted by admin on Sep 21, 2009 in news

There was a time when any discussion about music on the net would have been all about file-sharing, piracy and the decline of CD sales.
But in a sign of how things have changed, the talk now is of what kind of legal download services will resonate with music fans.
And the people involved in these new offerings are looking forward to a time when digital music services will be available at any time, on any device.
“The jukebox in the sky is such a
cliché but those kinds of things are coming,” said Paul Greenberg, senior vice president of business development for online music supplier MusicNet.
“Getting these services off the PC is an obvious step, whether to the cell phone to a device that is wi-fi enabled, to the set up box to a game console.”
“We’ve got to get to where the consumer is. We’re not quite there yet,” he told a session on the future of digital music at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
