Blog: Divisions over death penalty

Posted by admin on Oct 5, 2009 in Uncategorized

Various political parties in the state remain divided over the mercy petition.
The Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi, has spoken out against the death penalty.
Observers say he is believed to be sympathetic to the Tamil nationalists supporting the Tamil Tigers who have been fighting for a separate homeland in Sri Lanka.
He said that life sentences would give the guilty a chance of reforming themselves.
But the former chief minister and leader of the main opposition party in the state, Jayalalitha, today attacked Mr Karunanidhi for his suggestions.
She said no person in his right mind could ever advocate such a course.
Some Congress leaders have already objected to appeals for clemency while some members of the governing national coalition had argued in favour of clemency as a humanitarian gesture.

Mother Teresa, an Albanian born in the capital of the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, Skopje, won the Nobel Peace prize in 1979, for her work for the poor and downtrodden in Calcutta. In 1980, 70 years after her birth, Mother Teresa returned to Skopje to inaugurate a mission of her Missionaries of Charity and was made a citizen of honour by city officials.
She died at the age of 87, in Calcutta on 5 September 1997, following a heart attack

Blog:Wounds, odours and miracles

For Padre Pio, the events that set him on the path to sainthood began in September 1918.
“After I had celebrated Mass, I yielded to a drowsiness similar to a sweet sleep,” he wrote later to his spiritual advisor.
While in this drowsy state, the 31-year-old Capuchin monk saw a “mysterious person” whose “hands, feet and side were dripping blood”.
The sight terrified me and what I felt at that moment is indescribable,” Padre Pio wrote.
“I thought I should die and really should have died if the Lord had not intervened and strengthened my heart which was about to burst out of my chest.
“The vision disappeared and I became aware that my hands, feet and side were dripping blood.
“Imagine the agony I experienced and continue to experience almost every day. The heart wound bleeds continually, especially from Thursday evening until Saturday.”

The fighting has forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee Vavuniya in the past two days, with reports saying that Tiger artillery shells are landing just a few kilometres away.
A clandestine Tiger radio broadcast has announced that the rebels are closing in on Omanthai, which is under heavy artillery attack.
They say they have also destroyed a military camp in the Weli Oya region in the northeast. Local reports say that 12 soldiers have been wounded in the latest artillery exchanges.

Blog:India’s malnutrition ‘crisis’

Posted by admin on Oct 5, 2009 in Uncategorized

The World Bank has said malnutrition affects huge numbers of people in India, especially women and children, despite decades of often effective government action.

Its report “Wasting Away – The Crisis of Malnutrition in India” blames poverty and low status of women for some of its most shocking statistics – half of all children under four are malnourished, it says, and 60% of women are anaemic.

Mothers and sisters often forego food in poor families to give husbands and sons more than their share, the report says.

One of the authors of the report, Mira Chatterjee, says malnutrition on such scale means money invested in education is not used effectively as hungry children cannot study.

Blog:Afghanistan: Back from the brink

Posted by admin on Oct 5, 2009 in Uncategorized

From the Communist takeover of 1978 to the destruction of Kabul in 1992 and its subsequent fall to the Taliban in 1996, Afghanistan has been back from the brink many times before.
There is no reason why it should be different this time.
I was in Kabul in March 2001 when the Taliban blew up the two 2nd Century Buddha statues carved into a mountainside in central Bamyan province.
I remember the gloom, and even despair, it caused among some of the Taliban’s own mid-ranking officials.
I thought things had slid past the point of no return.
But then came hope, disguised as an ostensibly unpopular decision of the United States to attack the country and expel the Taliban.

Blog: Winning the peace in Sri Lanka

Posted by admin on Oct 5, 2009 in Uncategorized

Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict has almost ended after nearly three decades with the military defeat of the Tamil Tigers but the victorious government may still need to tackle other fronts, including finding a political solution to the long-standing Tamil issue.
Apart from the Tamil minority, the international community will be keenly observing the next moves of the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, which doggedly pursued its military objectives despite criticism from various quarters.
The dramatic events of recent weeks, including the annihilation of almost the entire senior Tamil Tiger (LTTE) leadership and the end of the military offensive, will no doubt increase the government’s popularity in the majority-Sinhalese south. The military victory will be regarded as the crowning glory of President Rajapaksa’s administration. But there are daunting tasks ahead.

Blog:Casualties rise

Posted by admin on Oct 5, 2009 in Uncategorized

What is more, although many Americans may want to call it a success, few Iraqis use that term to describe the state of their country two years after the Bush surge.
There may be less bloodshed than before, but there are still attacks in Iraq every day.
In the first six months of this year, more than 2,000 Iraqi civilians died in violence, over double the number in Afghanistan in the same period.
And the casualty rate in Iraq has risen again in recent weeks because of an increase in attacks since the US pullout from the cities.
More than 100 people were killed in mass bombings in central Baghdad last week.

Blog:No improvement

Posted by admin on Oct 5, 2009 in Uncategorized

Indian Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha says the two countries have agreed to grant visas to each others’ diplomats so that they can take up their posts.
“Simultaneous [visa] clearance is expected today,” the Indian spokesman Navtej Sarna was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying on Tuesday.
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokar told the BBC that his country had proposed visa exchanges, and if India agreed, Islamabad would approve the exchange of deputy ambassadors.
Analysts say relations between the nuclear-armed neighbours have hit the lowest point since last year when they came close to armed conflict.
They say the agreement to restore diplomatic contacts does not indicate relations are improving.
