Nets fire Lawrence Frank after 0-16 start

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 in Uncategorized

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—The New Jersey Nets fired coach Lawrence Frank on Sunday after losing their first 16 games during one of the worst starts in NBA history.
Assistant Tom Barrise will coach the team Sunday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers, when the Nets could tie the record for the worst start if they lose.
The Nets said a permanent replacement for Frank hasn’t been determined.
Frank was in his sixth full season, the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference and the winningest coach in the Nets’ NBA history. But none of those victories came this season, and the team dismissed him with a 225-241 record.
“Lawrence always approached every day with a passion for his craft that was infectious, and his dedication to the game as well as his work ethic are to be both admired and appreciated,” Nets president Rod Thorn said in a statement. “I wish he and his family only the best of good fortune in the future.”
Frank, from nearby Teaneck, N.J., began his career with a 13-game winning streak, the best coaching start in league history. But he couldn’t overcome a losing streak that was even longer, just a game shy of the 17-game skids set by the 1988-89 Miami Heat and the 1999 Los Angeles Clippers.
Plagued by injuries this season, the Nets faced some games where they were missing four starters and suited up the minimum eight players. Still, they played hard and stayed close for most of those games, figuring the wins would come when they started getting some bodies back.
“That’s probably as little talent as I’ve seen anybody put on the floor in the long time with everybody hurt,” Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. “Yet they were able to fight and stay competitive. The guy’s done a great job there.”
Despite the losses, Frank was expected to last through the four-game trip out West that ends Sunday, with management wanting to give him time with a regular roster. But they decided it was time for a change after the Nets fell far behind in losses at Denver and Sacramento.
After 3 1/2 seasons as a Nets assistant, Frank replaced the fired Byron Scott on Jan. 26, 2004.
He quickly turned around a struggling team with his record-setting start, winning Eastern Conference coach of the month honors in February after leading the Nets to an 11-2 record, a franchise-record .846 winning percentage.
The Nets made the playoffs in each of Frank’s first four seasons, advancing to the second round in three of them, before returning to their longtime losing ways while slashing payroll in recent years.
Jason Kidd(notes) was traded in February 2008, fellow veterans Richard Jefferson(notes) and Vince Carter(notes) were gone by last summer’s draft, and only the Kidd deal that landed All-Star point guard Devin Harris(notes) brought back much in return.
So after losing in the East semifinals in 2006 and ’07, the Nets stumbled to 34-48 finishes the last two seasons.
Plagued by poor attendance and heavy financial losses while playing at the Meadowlands, the Nets have been looking ahead to a move to Brooklyn. While management could make decisions with that in mind, Frank ultimately paid the price for what was happening in the present.
The deals helped the Nets’ financial future, leaving them with the most salary cap space available for the stellar free agent class expected next summer. But it left the team devoid of talented depth when New Jersey was plagued by injuries early this season.
“I just know that with the lineups he’s had to put on the floor, I don’t think any coach would have done anything better than he’s done. There seriously can’t be people out there who think they were losing because of coaching,” Van Gundy said before playing at New York.
“New Jersey’s front office obviously thought they should have been winning games. Why they would have that expectation, I have absolutely no idea.”
Even if the Nets played well, Frank might not have made it past this season.
Owners will vote by the end of next month whether to approve the sale of the team to Russian Mikhail Prokhorov. If the sale goes through, as expected, Prokhorov could decide to bring in his own coaching staff.
Frank is the second NBA coach fired this season, following his predecessor in New Jersey, Scott, who lost his job in New Orleans.

Goodell to expand concussion restrictions

Posted by admin on Nov 29, 2009 in Uncategorized

NEW YORK (AP)—NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reportedly will expand restrictions on returning to games for players who sustain head trauma.
Fox Sports reported Sunday that Goodell will issue a memo this week to all 32 teams expanding grounds for the removal of a player with a head injury or concussion.
Currently, a player can return to the game after being diagnosed with a concussion if he is asymptomatic at rest and under exertion, and is cleared by the team doctor. The lone exception is if the medical staff determines the player lost consciousness, in which case he is ruled out for the remainder of the game.
The report said that if a player is “woozy, has general dementia or memory loss,” Goodell wants him barred from returning to a game.
“We are continuing to review all aspects of our guidelines on concussion management and treatment,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.
The league would not comment on the Fox report.
The Steelers made Ben Roethlisberger(notes) their third quarterback for Sunday night’s game in Baltimore after he sustained his fourth concussion since 2006 in a loss at Kansas City last weekend. Roethlisberger practiced this week, but began experiencing headaches resulting from the concussion. He was examined Saturday by an independent neurologist, a practice the Steelers have used for years in dealing with head injuries, before the team decided to bench him.
The Associated Press this month conducted a survey of 160 NFL players— about 10 percent of the league—and 30 replied that they have hidden or played down the effects of a concussion.
The NFL says its data show an average of one reported concussion every other game—about 120 to 130 concussions per regular season. Of the 160 players interviewed by the AP, half said they’ve had at least one concussion playing football; 61 said they missed playing time because of the injury.

Louisville fires coach Steve Kragthorpe

Posted by admin on Nov 28, 2009 in Uncategorized

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)—Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich needed less than 48 hours to hire Steve Kragthorpe nearly three years ago, confident the coach who turned around the moribund program at Tulsa could keep the surging Cardinals atop the Big East.
The honeymoon lasted until the fourth quarter of Kragthorpe’s first game.
Three seasons, zero bowl games, 21 losses and thousands of empty seats at Cardinal Stadium later, Jurich knew it was time to move on.
“It just didn’t seem like the right fit from Day One,” Jurich said Saturday, shortly after firing Kragthorpe following a 4-8 season, the program’s worst in over a decade.
Kragthorpe went 15-21 in three seasons after replacing the massively successful Bobby Petrino in January 2007. He had two years remaining on a contract that paid him about $1.1 annually, and Jurich said Kragthorpe will receive a $2.2 million buyout.
It’s an expensive parting gift, but one Jurich felt necessary after watching the Cardinals slip from national title contenders to Big East also-rans. The Cardinals went 5-16 in conference play under Kragthorpe and perhaps even worse, failed to beat rival Kentucky in three attempts.
“I was hoping we’d get over the hump this year,” Jurich said. “I thought we could get through the year and really build some momentum and obviously that didn’t happen.”
Kragthorpe declined comment on Saturday but is expected to speak publicly on Monday.
The search for his replacement will begin immediately. The list of candidates could include Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer.
“I want to get a great leader of men and somebody that will take us to the heights we want to be at,” Jurich said.
Finding someone who can sell tickets wouldn’t hurt either.
A crowd of 23,422 turned out for a 34-14 loss to Rutgers on Friday. Several fans brought homemade signs voicing their displeasure with the direction of the program while others wore paper bags over their heads.
Even worse were the number of fans who didn’t show up at all.
Louisville averaged just over 32,000 at the 42,000-seat stadium, down from more than 41,000 during Petrino’s last season. With Cardinal Stadium expanding to 55,000 seats in time for the 2010 opener against Kentucky, Kragthorpe’s inability to connect with the Louisville fan base became painfully obvious.
“For everything he did in his life, he got hammered for,” Jurich said. “I don’t think there was anything right he could do.”
Despite the outside pressure, Kragthorpe remained popular with his players. Nearly two dozen left or were asked to leave as part of a locker room purge during his first 18 months on the job, which led to better unity on the sidelines, if not between the lines.
“Even though we didn’t have the wins that we wanted, Coach K was a great coach,” said junior wide receiver Doug Beaumont. “He showed us more than just the life of football. He showed us the life outside of football (and) our character off the field.”
But he was unable to find any sustained success on it.
His stay began with a top-10 ranking and whispers of a national title shot after Kragthorpe helped persuade star quarterback Brian Brohm to return for his senior season.
By the fourth quarter of his first game against Murray State, fans were already restless. They booed when the Cardinals decided to settle for a field goal while up 70-10 rather than tack on another meaningless touchdown.
Louisville quickly tumbled from the rankings following a last-second loss to Kentucky in his third game on the job and finished 6-6 that season. The Cardinals started 5-2 last year before losing their last five games, including a nationally televised 63-14 loss to Rutgers.
Kragthorpe came forward the next day and pledged to turn the program around while acknowledging his window of opportunity was closing.
On Saturday, following the worst season since the Cardinals went 1-10 in 1997, the window shut for good. A program that was blossoming three years ago after going 12-1 and winning the Orange Bowl now is in full rebuilding mode.
And unlike Kragthorpe’s speedy hire, which came 44 hours after Petrino bolted for the NFL, Jurich is in no rush to hire his replacement.
“I’m not going to intrude on anybody that’s playing right now,” he said.
Besides, it may take him awhile to find the money. Paying Kragthorpe for his troubles will “strap” the athletic department, according to Jurich. That doesn’t mean he plans on settling.
“I’ve got to find a way to go out and get a great one,” Jurich said.

Touched by NC girl’s death, Shaq pays for funeral

Posted by admin on Nov 26, 2009 in Uncategorized

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP)—Basketball star Shaquille O’Neal(notes) paid for the funeral of a 5-year-old North Carolina girl after being moved by national news coverage of the case of Shaniya Davis, who police say was kidnapped and killed.
The Cleveland Cavaliers player was touched by the stories he saw and got in touch with the family to see what he could do to help, a spokeswoman for O’Neal said Thursday.
More than 2,000 people attended the girl’s funeral Sunday. Her body was found Nov. 16 beside a rural road.
Her mother, Antionette Davis, who had reported the child missing six days earlier, is charged with human trafficking and child abuse involving prostitution. Mario McNeill is charged with murder, rape and kidnapping in the case.
“I was sitting at home watching it on the news and the story brought a tear to my eye,” O’Neal told The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.
Corey Breece, of Rogers and Breece Funeral Home, which handled the service, declined to tell the Fayetteville Observer newspaper how much it cost but added that a child’s funeral “averages around $4,500.”
A man who answered the phone at the funeral home Thursday told the AP that only the owner could comment and that he was away.
Shaniya Davis’ father, Bradley Lockhart, and his family had set up a trust fund in memory of Shaniya to help raise money to pay for the funeral. Lockhart was not available to talk Thursday, said a man who answered the phone at his home.
O’Neal is recovering from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him for six straight games since getting hurt Nov. 12 against Miami.

Bengals RB Benson might play vs Browns

Posted by admin on Nov 25, 2009 in Uncategorized

CINCINNATI (AP)—Even if Cedric Benson(notes) is able to play Sunday against Cleveland, he’s going to have a lot of company in the Cincinnati Bengals’s running game.
Benson returned to practice Wednesday, going through a limited workout because of his sprained hip muscles. The injury kept him out of a 20-17 loss at Oakland.
Coach Marvin Lewis said Wednesday that Benson is “very close” and might be able to play against the Browns, a team he ran over last year. Benson had a career-high 38 carries for 171 yards in a 14-0 win in Cleveland last December in a zero wind chill.
Rookie backup Bernard Scott(notes) is expected to get a lot of carries against Cleveland, even if Benson is able to play. Larry Johnson(notes) also could see more time on the field in his second game since he signed with Cincinnati.
Scott, a sixth-round draft pick from Abilene Christian, has emerged in the last two games. He returned a kickoff 96 yards for the only touchdown during an 18-12 win in Pittsburgh. He also kept the running game going after Benson hurt his hip during the game, carrying 13 times for 33 yards.
In Oakland, he ran 21 times for 119 yards. The 21 carries were only eight shy of his total for the first nine games.
“Bernard has earned an opportunity to continue to play,” Lewis said. “He’ll have a chance, and he’ll get some opportunities one way or the other. If Ced is back and playing, Bernard will still play a considerable amount this week.”
The Bengals (7-3) lead the AFC North by a game over Pittsburgh and will be trying to run the table in division games when they play Cleveland. Cincinnati is 5-0, with series sweeps of the Steelers and Ravens. They won an overtime game in Cleveland on Oct. 4.
A renewed commitment to the running game has been a big part of it. The Bengals have been using an extra offensive lineman in the tight end’s spot to block, or put a tight end in the backfield as an extra blocker. Instead of looking to have Carson Palmer(notes) throw the ball, the Bengals have been more dependent upon having him hand off.
The Browns (1-9) have committed to stopping Chad Ochocinco(notes) and the rest of the Bengals’ receivers in the past.
“This is one of the few weeks I’m begging for us to run the ball,” Ochocinco said Wednesday. “Once we get to the postseason—we will be there— the key is to run the ball. That’s why I’m all for it right now.”
Scott has quickly become an important part of the offense.
“From day one, I felt I was here for a reason,” Scott said. “The more you’re out there making plays, the more it helps your confidence.”
Scott wasn’t used to carrying so many times in a game and got cramps in the fourth quarter in Oakland. He’s going to work at keeping his body hydrated this week to be ready for Cleveland.
“I haven’t been playing and all of a sudden, I’m playing,” he said. “I hadn’t played in a game since college, really. I think the more I play, the better my conditioning will get. Hopefully I won’t have those problems anymore.”
Lewis is confident that Scott will handle the next game better, pointing out that rookies often struggle to get through their first game.
“It kind of blows the pipes out a little bit,” Lewis said. “But once you get through it, you’re good. That’s kind of a one-time situation, and then you’re generally good to go. That happens to a lot of guys to start the year.”

The History of Ugg Boots

Posted by admin on Nov 24, 2009 in Uncategorized

“We always called them Uggs, Smith says, “long before it was a trademarked brand.” Brian Smith, Founder UGG Holdings, Inc. Los Angeles Magazine October 1st, 2001
By the 1970s, in Perth, the largest city on Australia’s West Coast, cheap ugg classic cardy boots were being manufactured by several small companies in the area. Perth has much the same climate as Southern California and is also a haven for surfers, whom Aussies call “surfies.”
Today the ugg classic cardy sale “secret” is out. You’ll find these versatile boots to be in fashion on beaches from San Diego to Santa Cruz and in ski resorts from Tahoe to Vail. And today, you don’t have to “know someone” in Australia who will send you a pair, since there are now a number of companies importing boots of this type. But, if you want the genuine article, you do have to know what you’re looking for because, no matter how they spell it — classic cardy ugg cheap — there are several importers with look-alike products that fall short of being the real thing.
