“Oh, God, I wish Joe was here!” she cried.
“You know what he’d say, Rennie. Crying is one of the things that are beside the point: you’re just begging the question. This Devil business is too easy. It lets you get rid of me on false pretenses.”
“You’re notreal like Joe is! He’s the same man today he was yesterday, all the way through. He’s genuine! That’s the difference.”
She was sitting on the ground, her head on her knees, and still I stroked her hair.
“But not me,” I said.
“No!”
“How about you?”
For answer she whipped her head from side to side shortly.
“I don’t know. Joe’s strong enough to take care of me, I guess. I don’t care.”
This was absurd and we both knew it. I confined my argument to stroking her hair, which made her shudder. We sat thus for perhaps five minutes without saying anything. Then Rennie got up.
“I hope to Christ you know what you’re doing to us, Jake,” she said. I made no reply.
“Joe’s real enough to handle you,” she said. “He’s real enough for both of us.”
“Nothing plus one is one,” I said agreeably.
Now Rennie was tight-lipped, and rubbed her stomach nervously. “That’s right,” she said.

About this wonderful history of lost innocence, I offer two remarks.
First, it is in my opinion an innocence well lost. One should be no great admirer of innocence, in either narratives, individuals, or cultures. Where it’s genuine, after a certain age it’s unbecoming, off-putting, even freakish and dangerous. Where it’s false, it’s false. To admire it much is patronizing and sentimental; to aspire to it is self-defeating. Let us admire — in cultures, narratives, and people — not innocence, but experience and grace.
Second, and on the other hand, self-consciousness, even self-reflexiveness, are so much in the cultural air we breathe now that they can have a kind of innocence of their own. I am reminded of this paradox by every Woody Allen movie, every television news show opening shot of the cameras filming the cameras filming John Chancellor or Walter Cronkite watching the monitors showing the cameras, etc.: naïve, unselfconscious self-consciousness. And so perhaps of self-consciousness, too, we may say with Huck Finn: That is nothing.
But if self-consciousness goes back to Adam and Eve, and authorial self-consciousness back at least to Flaubert if not to the scribe Khakheperresenb, surely postmodernist authorial self-consciousness has a shorter pedigree, at least if we detach it from the modernism of which it is variously regarded as an extension, an attenuation, an aftermath, an anticlimax, or an adversary reaction. I have been told that Arnold Toynbee uses the term “post-modern” somewhere in his vast Study of History: I haven’t the heart to check. Let’s content ourselves that in 1967 or thereabouts, certain literary critics seem to have borrowed the term from their colleagues in the graphic and plastic arts, as their forebears borrowed the term modernism.

Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home!
A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there,
Which seek through the world, is ne’er met with elsewhere,
Home! Home! Sweet, sweet Home!
There’s no place like Home! There’s no place like Home!
I gaze on the moon as I tread the drear wild,
And feel that my mother now thinks of her child,
As she looks on that moon from our own cottage door,
Through the woodbine, whose fragrance shall cheer me no more.
Home! Home! Sweet, sweet Home!
There’s no place like Home! There’s no place like Home!
An exile from home, splendor dazzles in vain;
Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again!
The birds singing gaily, that came at my call-
Give me them, and the peace of mind, dearer than all!
Home! Home! Sweet, sweet Home!
There’s no place like Home! There’s no place like Home!
对一个离乡背井的游子,再华丽的光辉,也是徒然闪烁;
一栋矮檐茅舍!
一呼即来的鸟儿正在欢唱
赐给它们-还有心灵的平静,这些胜过一切!
家啊!家啊!甜蜜的家啊!
没有地方比得上家!没有地方比得上家!

Lake Waikaremoana (Sea of rippling waters) covers 55 square kilometres of the 2120-square-km Urewera National Park. The lake is at 582 metres and is surrounded by dense forest. The walk around the western and southern sides of the lake is a DOC ‘Great Walk’, so you need to book places in the huts before you go. The scenery is beautiful, the huts are good and the track is great.

Get receiptsLastly, when using cash, we still need to ask for and keep receipts. This is important because we want to get ourselves into the proper discipline of sticking to our budgets. It is easy to forget where our cash went, especially after being out all day. We may start out with a $20 bill and, after spending a little here and a little there, it is all gone and we are unable to account for it.As easily as it happens with a $20 bill, it can happen with $100 or more.

NEW YORK – Some children get severely obese because they lack particular chunks of DNA, which kicks their hunger into overdrive, researchers report.
The British researchers checked the DNA of 300 children who’d become very fat, on the order of 220 pounds by age 10. They looked for deletions or extra copies of DNA segments.
They found evidence that several rare deletions may promote obesity, including one kind they studied further and found in less than 1 percent of about 1,200 severely obese children.
That deletion, on chromosome 16, apparently causes trouble because it removes a gene that the brain needs to respond to the appetite-controlling hormone leptin, said Dr. Sadaf Farooqi of Cambridge University.
In her study, children with a chromosome 16 DNA deletion “have a very strong drive to eat,” said Farooqi, who co-led the research. “They’re very, very hungry, they always want to eat.”
The work, reported online Sunday by the journal Nature, has already produced a real-world payoff. Farooqi said four children with the chromosome 16 deletion had drawn the attention of British child welfare authorities, who blamed the parents for overfeeding them.
“We were able to intervene” and get the parents of two children off the hook, and the other two cases are under discussion, she said.
That’s happened before when the scientists uncovered genetic causes for severe childhood obesity, she said.
“It’s a slightly unusual outcome of our research, but one we think is very important,” she said.
While scientists had previously discovered particular genes that promote obesity when damaged, the new work looked at larger chunks of DNA that can span several genes. The chromosome 16 deletion includes nine genes.
Eric Ravussin, an obesity expert at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., who wasn’t involved in the study, said the work provides “a gold mine of information.” That’s because it identifies specific chromosome areas that scientists can explore to discover obesity-related genes, he said.

ST. LOUIS – A consumer group contends one of the holiday season’s must-have toys is unsafe.
But the maker of the robotic Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters defended its product Saturday against a study by San Francisco-based GoodGuide that said higher-than-allowed levels of the chemical antimony were found in the toy.
Good Guide named Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters one of the top-selling toys with low ratings after finding antimony, which can cause health problems, on the hair and nose of one of the toy hamsters, called Mr. Squiggles.
The group assigned the toy, aimed at 3- to 10-year-olds, a rating of 5.2 on a 10-point scale.
But the toy’s maker, St. Louis-based Cepia LLC, insisted in a statement that its product is safe and has passed rigorous testing. The company said it was contacting GoodGuide to share its testing data and determine how the report was founded.
“I have been in the toy industry for more than 35 years, and being a father of children myself, I would never allow any substandard or unsafe product to hit the shelves,” Russ Hornsby, Cepia’s CEO, said in the statement.
Zhu Zhu Pets, which retail for about $10, have become this season’s toy craze, following in the footsteps of Tickle Me Elmo and Cabbage Patch Kids. The items fetch $40 or more on resale Web sites like eBay and Craigslist.
That’s what brought it to GoodGuide’s attention. GoodGuide CEO Dara O’Rourke told The Associated Press on Saturday that his group bought three of each of the year’s 30 hottest toys and tested them multiple times.
Antimony was measured at 93 parts per million in the hamster’s fur and at 106 parts per million in its nose. Both readings exceed the allowable level of 60 parts per million, said O’Rourke, an associate professor of environmental science at the University of California, Berkeley.
O’Rourke said GoodGuide’s test results, released Friday, also indicated the possibility that some toys contained phthalates, chemicals that were subject to tougher standards in the Consumer Protection Safety Improvement Act passed last year.
